Who are we?

The Observatoire national de la biodiversité is a participatory project that brings together all the stakeholders interested in the production of precise, documented information on biodiversity and its interactions with our society. All its works are discussed openly with all stakeholders and its results are published in full on this site. The observatory is committed to continuous improvementand the contents and figures published on this site change over time to incorporate participants' contributions.

Under the authority of the French Ministry of Environment, specifically the Directorate for Water and Biodiversity DEB Direction de l'eau et de la biodiversité ) andsupported by the Ministry’s Observation and Statistics Department SOes Service de l'observation et des statistiques) as well as the French Museum of Natural History (MNHN - Muséum national d'histoire naturelle),the observatory forms an integral part of the biodiversity policy presented on the ministry website (external link).

The works published on the observatory’s website are approved by the observatory’s national committee, which includes representatives of all areas of society.

What do we do?

The Observatoire national de la biodiversité provides an overview of information about the status and evolution of biodiversity and the interactions between biodiversity and society. In particular, it is responsible for proposing monitoring indicators – imainly the French National Strategy for Biodiversity (stratégie nationale pour la biodiversité) – and for making them available to all. Since 2009, the project has developed along three main lines:

  • Organisation and governance;

  • Tools (including this website);

  • Products (primarily indicators).

The origin, history, organisation and governance of the project are presented on the NatureFrance site.

The actions in progress are presented on the NatureFrance site.
